Fishing | Ethics, Uncertainty & the Pleasure of Learning — English Article Guide

Exploring Fishing Through Questions and Experience

I began fishing around the age of 60.

Before starting, I spent time considering the relationship between recreational fishing, the suffering of fish, and my own reluctance to kill animals unnecessarily.

Those questions became part of the experience of learning to fish.

Once I started, other questions emerged. Why is fishing enjoyable even when no fish are caught? How much does success depend on skill, and how much on chance? What does owning a boat contribute to the experience?

This collection brings together my English-language articles on fishing, organized around three themes.

1. Fishing Ethics & Catch and Release

Fishing is a human activity involving other living creatures. Deciding to participate led me to examine the biological and ethical aspects of catching fish.

These two articles trace the questions I considered before beginning fishing and the reasoning that shaped my decision to practice catch and release.

2. Chance, Skill & the Enjoyment of Fishing

Fishing takes place in a natural environment that we can observe but never fully control.

Success depends on many interacting conditions, including fish behavior, location, weather, timing, equipment, and the angler’s decisions.

This makes fishing an interesting activity through which to explore uncertainty, experimentation, and the nature of enjoyment.

Together, these articles consider how fishing can remain rewarding through observation, imagination, and the gradual development of experience.

3. The Economics of Boat Fishing

Owning a pleasure boat creates opportunities to fish independently, but it also involves considerable expense.

The economic value of catching fish and the personal value of owning a boat lead to different ways of evaluating the same activity.
