Exploring Societies Through History and Institutions

Japan, China, and Korea share a geographical region and many historical connections, yet their societies have developed through different experiences and institutional arrangements.

My interest lies in how geography, agriculture, political institutions, religion, cultural practices, and historical continuity help shape the societies in which people live.

The essays collected here examine Japanese history and culture alongside broader questions about East Asian societies.

1. Wet-Rice Agriculture and the Formation of Japanese Society

Rice paddies are a familiar feature of the Japanese landscape.

Their development and maintenance involve irrigation, cooperation, shared responsibilities, and repeated efforts across generations.

These conditions offer an interesting perspective on the formation of communities and social practices.

The first article examines wet-rice agriculture as a social and historical system. The second extends the discussion to Japanese views of nature, impermanence, and the imperial institution.

2. Shinto, Craftsmanship & Historical Continuity

Religious practices, public institutions, and cultural traditions can preserve meanings and relationships across generations.

These articles explore aspects of Japanese civilization through ritual, continuity, renewal, and the care devoted to material and cultural practices.

The first essay considers connections between Shinto ideas and craftsmanship. The second places the continuity of the Japanese imperial line within a broader civilizational perspective.

3. Everyday Culture and the Built Environment

Buildings and everyday customs can reveal assumptions about beauty, order, community, and the use of shared spaces.

This article explores a distinctive form of Japanese public bathhouse architecture and the social experience associated with it.

4. Comparing East Asian Societies

Geography, historical experience, institutions, and social arrangements influence how societies develop.

Comparing neighboring countries offers an opportunity to examine how different conditions may contribute to different patterns of social behavior.

This essay considers Japan, China, and Korea through their geographical, historical, and institutional backgrounds.

The relationship between social structures and individual behavior is also an important theme in my English-language essays on human nature, relationships, and decision-making.
