Exploring Stories Through Characters and Their Choices
Stories can reveal aspects of human nature through fictional characters, imagined worlds, and the consequences of difficult choices.
I am particularly interested in narratives that invite viewers to think about identity, responsibility, moral conflict, and the internal consistency of a fictional world.
My English-language collection in this area currently focuses on Star Wars.
1. Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker & the Human Story Behind the Mask
Darth Vader is one of cinema’s most recognizable characters.
Behind the mask lies the story of Anakin Skywalker, whose transformation, long separation from his former life, and eventual return raise questions about identity, regret, loyalty, and redemption.
This essay traces Anakin’s story through the years he lived as Darth Vader and considers the significance of his final choices.
2. The Last Jedi, Audience Expectations & Narrative Choices
A long-running fictional universe develops through a relationship between its creators, established characters, narrative conventions, and the expectations of its audience.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi produced widely differing reactions, making it an interesting subject for examining storytelling and audience interpretation.
This article considers the controversy surrounding the film, including its treatment of familiar characters and the difference between commercial performance and audience response.
