How to Perform a Heel-and-Toe Downshift

Practicing Throttle Blipping
1. Explore the Throttle Response While Stationary
Choose level ground where you can secure the car safely and exhaust gases cannot accumulate. Select neutral and firmly apply the parking brake.
With the engine warmed up, choose a modest target engine speed appropriate for the vehicle and give the accelerator a brief press. Observe how the amount and duration of your input affect the rise in engine speed. There is no need to aim for high revs at this stage.
Also observe how the revs fall after you release the accelerator. When driving, you will need to coordinate not only the size of the blip but also the time between the blip and clutch engagement.
2. Practice a Single-Gear Downshift at Low Speed

1. Check the Pedal Layout and Your Foot Position

There is no need to start with hard braking. First aim to make the throttle blip without an unintended change in deceleration, and to re-engage the clutch without a jolt.

Rev matching cannot compensate for an inappropriate gear choice.
