Does Seakeeper Ride Really Work? ★ What I Learned After 16 Months

It has been 16 months since I replaced the original trim tabs on my Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895 Sport with Seakeeper Ride. The boat is powered by twin Honda 250 hp outboards.

My conclusion is simple: it works. At least on my boat, I can clearly feel the difference.

My Merry Fisher 895 Sport is a relatively heavy boat with a cabin and onboard living space. So rather than the dramatic visual changes you sometimes see in videos of lighter center-console boats, I experience the effect more as a calmer ride, with less harsh movement and pounding underway.

After 16 months, having Ride ON has become my normal reference point.

That is why I often notice its effect most clearly when I forget to turn it on.

I rarely think about Ride while it is working.

Instead, I notice when it is not working.

That is probably the most accurate way to describe how it feels after 16 months.


I Notice Ride When I Get Underway Again

When I am out SUP-foiling or fishing, I often shut down the engines and the boat’s main power while I am on the water.

Later, when I start the engines again and get underway, there are times when I find myself thinking:

“The boat feels unusually lively today.”

Then I look at the switch and realize that I forgot to turn Seakeeper Ride back on.

Once I switch Ride ON, the way the boat responds to the waves feels softer, and the small, restless movements settle down.

This moment after restarting is probably when I notice Ride’s effect most clearly.

I deliberately had Ride set up so I could power it on and off separately from the navigation electronics. When I am SUP-foiling or fishing, there are long periods when I do not need Ride running, so being able to power only what I need suits the way I use the boat.

The trade-off is that I sometimes forget to turn Ride back on—and each time, I feel the difference between OFF and ON all over again.


How Ride Feels on a Merry Fisher 895 Sport

Many YouTube videos demonstrating Seakeeper Ride feature relatively light center-console boats with less mass toward the bow.

On boats like those, the difference in pitching between Ride ON and OFF can be visually dramatic.

My Merry Fisher 895 Sport carries a cabin and accommodation farther forward and has a fair amount of overall mass.

On my boat, the effect is less about dramatic visible movement and more about the sharpness of impacts and the way the boat moves through the water.

I had already operated this boat for about a year and a half before installing Ride.

That made it easy for me to recognize one particular change after installation:

the hull no longer hit the water with the same sharpness.

That was the difference that stood out most strongly to me after the first two months with Seakeeper Ride.

Now, after 16 months, I think my body has simply learned to treat the Ride-stabilized behavior of the boat as normal.

That adaptation is one of the things I could only appreciate after living with the system for a long time.


Quiet Technology You Forget Is Working

While the boat is underway, Seakeeper Ride rapidly adjusts movable blades beneath the transom in response to the boat’s movement.

The whole process is remarkably unobtrusive.

At the helm, I rarely have any awareness of exactly what Ride is correcting at a given moment.

Passengers are also more likely to simply feel that the boat is settled than to think about the system itself.

When I get underway without activating Ride, however, I notice more small movements in the hull, and the rolling takes longer to settle.

That is when I find myself thinking:

“So this is what Ride has been taking care of all along.”

It reminds me of a well-designed suspension system or modern electronic chassis control in a car. You may barely notice the system while it is doing its job, but its contribution becomes obvious when it is no longer there.

That is what Seakeeper Ride has become for me.


Reliability After 16 Months

After 16 months, Seakeeper Ride has not caused a single problem on my boat.

I have not noticed any obvious deterioration, and the stabilizing effect feels the same to me as it did when the system was first installed.

The fact that I can use it on every trip without having to think about the equipment itself has become an important part of its value.

My top speed remains slightly lower than it was before installation.

For me, however, the improvement in the quality of the time I spend on the water matters far more.


Conclusion | It Has Become So Normal That I Forget It Is Working

Seakeeper Ride works.

After 16 months, what stands out to me is the fact that a more stable boat has quietly become my normal.

I finish SUP-foiling or fishing, get underway again, and think:

“Why does the boat feel so lively?”

Then I notice that I forgot to turn Ride back on.

I switch it on, the boat settles back into its usual, calmer behavior, and everything feels normal again.

That is the moment when I remember how much work Ride has been doing in the background.

For someone like me who regularly runs in choppy water, Seakeeper Ride has become the kind of equipment that makes me think:

“I could boat without it. But now that I know this level of stability, I would not want to go back.”
